The Clearest Sky on Earth
The Sahara Desert sits at high altitude, far from any city, with minimal humidity and zero industrial light pollution. On a clear night — which in Merzouga means almost every night of the year — the sky contains an estimated five times more visible stars than you can see from a European city.
With the naked eye alone, you can see the Milky Way as a luminous band across the sky, identify the major planets, watch meteor showers in season, and observe the slow rotation of the heavens as it was seen by desert peoples for thousands of years.
With a telescope, the experience becomes extraordinary.
What Your Guide Will Show You
Your astronomer guide carries a computerised GoTo telescope that locates any object in the sky instantly. During a 2–3 hour session, a typical itinerary covers:
- The Moon (when present): crater details, maria, and mountain ranges
- Planets: Saturn's rings and moons, Jupiter's cloud bands and four Galilean moons, Mars's polar cap in season
- Star clusters: the Pleiades, the Beehive, and the Double Cluster in Perseus
- Nebulae: the Orion Nebula (winter), the Lagoon Nebula (summer)
- Deep-sky objects: the Andromeda Galaxy, visible to the naked eye on clear nights
Astrophotography
Merzouga is an outstanding location for astrophotography. If you bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera on a tripod, your guide will help you set up long-exposure shots to capture the Milky Way. The dark sand dunes in the foreground make for iconic compositions.
Best Conditions
- Best months: October to April (cooler nights, excellent clarity)
- Avoid: nights within 3 days of a full moon (the moonlight washes out faint objects)
- Dress warmly: desert nights drop to 5–10°C even in summer at this altitude
Sessions begin after astronomical twilight — approximately 90 minutes after sunset.
