A camel ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes is the defining moment of any visit to Merzouga. Mounted on a gentle dromedary camel, you'll glide silently over rippling golden sand dunes that rise up to 150 metres high — one of the tallest ergs in Morocco.

Our experienced Berber guides lead small groups at a comfortable pace, pausing at the best viewpoints so you can capture the extraordinary landscape. The route winds through dune corridors where the only sounds are the soft thud of camel hooves and the whisper of desert wind.

Sunset & Sunrise Options

The most popular time is the late afternoon, when the slanting light turns the sand deep amber and rose. Guides time the ride to reach the crest of a high dune just as the sun touches the horizon — a moment travellers describe as genuinely life-changing.

For early risers, the sunrise ride is equally spectacular. The desert is cool, silent, and painted in pastel pinks and purples as the day begins.

• Camels are well-cared-for and accustomed to riders of all experience levels
• Comfortable closed-toe shoes are recommended

For the complete experience, extend your camel ride into a private overnight desert camp. After riding into the dunes at sunset, enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under the stars, sleep in a comfortable tent, and wake to watch the sunrise before riding back to Merzouga.
