Located in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southeastern Morocco, Errachidia (formerly known as Ksar Es-Souk) is the regional provincial capital and the ultimate scenic flight gateway to the Sahara Desert.

While many travelers view Errachidia simply as the airport hub closest to the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, the surrounding Ziz Valley (Vallée du Ziz) is one of the most visually breathtaking desert canyons in North Africa. Carved by the Oued Ziz river over millions of years through towering limestone cliffs, the valley is home to a lush, unbroken ribbon of over one million date palms, ancient adobe ksour (fortified earthen villages), natural turquoise freshwater springs, and historic French colonial engineering marvels.

In this comprehensive 2026 travel guide, our local team at MerzougaWay presents the top 10 things to do in Errachidia and the Ziz Valley, complete with admission fees in Moroccan Dirhams (MAD), flight details, transport routes, and desert connection logistics.

Part 1: Top 10 Things to Do in Errachidia & the Ziz Valley

1. Stand at the Monumental Ziz Valley Panoramic Viewpoint

Located along Highway N13 just south of Errachidia (near the village of Ouled Chaker):

  • The View: Pull off at the roadside viewing terrace perched hundreds of meters above the river canyon. Below you unfolds a breathtaking sea of over one million green date palm trees following the winding blue ribbon of the Oued Ziz, contrasting sharply with the barren, red-ochre desert cliffs.
  • Enjoy sweet mint tea and fresh dates at the clifftop cafe while taking in the panorama.

2. Drive the Dramatic Ziz Gorges (Gorges du Ziz)

Winding north of Errachidia toward Midelt, Highway N13 cuts directly through the sheer vertical limestone walls of the Ziz Gorges:

  • The road snakes beneath 300-meter-high rust-colored rock faces that glow brilliant red in the late afternoon sun, rivaling the famous Todra and Dades Gorges in visual drama with a fraction of the tourist traffic.

3. Pass Through the Historic French Tunnel of Foum Zabel (1928)

Carved directly through solid granite mountain rock in 1928 by French Foreign Legionnaires (Légion Étrangère):

  • Known locally as the "Tunnel du Légionnaire", this historic single-lane tunnel marks the dramatic northern gateway into the Sahara desert plateau. Above the entrance, a weathered stone plaque reads: "The mountain blocked our path; order was given to pass through."

4. Swim in the Natural Spring of Source Bleue de Meski

Located 17 km southeast of Errachidia along the Oued Ziz riverbank:

  • The Oasis: A natural freshwater spring emerges from the base of a high limestone cliff, filling a stone-walled swimming pool surrounded by towering date palms, wild mint, and olive trees.
  • Take a refreshing swim in the cool, clear waters or explore the ruined clay walls of the ancient Ksar Meski overlooking the palm grove.
  • Entry: 15 MAD.

5. Photograph the Turquoise Waters of Hassan Addakhil Dam

Located 10 km north of Errachidia:

  • Built in 1971 to control the seasonal floodwaters of the Oued Ziz and irrigate the millions of date palms downstream in the Tafilalet oasis, the Hassan Addakhil Reservoir is a massive artificial lake of brilliant turquoise water set against arid, jagged mountain slopes.

6. Fly into Errachidia Airport (ERH) for the Fastest Sahara Route

Moulay Ali Cherif Airport (ERH) is Morocco's secret weapon for smart Sahara travelers:

  • Instead of spending 9 to 10 hours driving across the High Atlas from Marrakech or Casablanca, take a direct 1-hour flight from Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc) or direct flights from Europe (Ryanair) straight into Errachidia.
  • From the airport terminal, a comfortable private 4x4 transfer reaches the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga in under 2 hours!

7. Explore Traditional Earthen Ksour (Adobe Mud Villages)

The Ziz Valley is dotted with hundreds of ancient fortified mud-brick communities (Ksour):

  • Visit Ksar Amezrou or Ksar Tazouka to walk through cool, subterranean vaulted adobe tunnels designed to provide natural climate control and defense against historic desert raiders.

8. Taste Fresh Medjool & Boufeggous Dates from Oasis Cooperatives

The Tafilalet region surrounding Errachidia is world-renowned for producing the highest quality dates in Morocco:

  • Sample premium Medjool dates (large, sweet, and succulent), Boufeggous (caramel-flavored with tender skins), and Majhoul directly from local oasis agricultural cooperatives.

9. Wander Errachidia's Non-Tourist Local Souk

Unlike the bustling, high-pressure tourist bazaars of Marrakech:

  • Errachidia's town center market along Avenue Moulay Ali Cherif offers an authentic, unhurried glimpse into daily Saharan provincial life. Browse fresh desert produce, local spices, clay cookware, and traditional woven Berber wool rugs with zero sales pressure.

10. Embark on a Fast-Track Desert Tour to Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Errachidia is the ultimate launching pad for the Sahara:

  • A private 2-Day or 3-Day Desert Tour from Errachidia takes you down Highway N13 through the date groves of the Ziz Valley, the fossil workshops of Erfoud, the holy town of Rissani, and straight into a 5-Star Luxury Desert Camp in the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi!

We traveled to Morocco in a group of 6 adults, including my parents, who are already seniors, in the middle of summer. For my family it was a leap of faith to trust an agency we found online for the first time, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Hamid, the trip organizer, was very kind and attentive both before and throughout the whole tour. It was a fully personalized tour - we got to do everything we wanted, from visiting the Sahara to enjoying the beach. He always looked out for our comfort, especially my parents': comfortable transport, well-timed stops at places with restrooms, beautiful air-conditioned hotels, and varied, plentiful food. Thanks to his organization we were able to enjoy the trip with real peace of mind. It was a great experience we would absolutely recommend.

Last week I did a self-drive trip from Fes to Merzouga, leaving the car rental, the riad in Merzouga, the desert camp, and the guided desert activities all in the hands of MerzougaWay and Hamid, and I can only say that everything was perfectly organized, right on time. Thanks to everyone at the riad we stayed at and the desert camp, as well as the guides who joined us for the 4x4 experience, Berber culture, and the camel transfer. Thanks to Hamid and MerzougaWay for that quad-bike ride back to the riad from the camp - what an experience, riding a quad across the dunes early in the morning. If you're thinking of traveling to Merzouga, I definitely recommend Hamid as the organizer of your adventure.

Trustworthy tour agency. I wrote Hamid what I wanted and he just made it happen. He arranged everything so quick and smooth. We had a 3-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech. Said was our guide and he made me and my wife very comfortable. He took us from our riad and carried us in his modern 4x4 Toyota to magnificent places. He gave us the confidence to ask him whatever we wanted to do and wherever we wanted to drive - like old friends. He is open-minded and respectful. I recommend asking the agency for Said to be your driver. In the 3-day tour you cross the Atlas mountains, stay one night in a perfect hotel in Dades with great food, then stay one night in Erg Chebbi dunes in a luxury glamp camp. One night wasn't enough for a real desert experience - if you have time, take two nights in the desert.

Unforgettable holiday. An 8-day itinerant tour in Morocco, including 3 days organized by Hamid - MerzougaWay: a route from Fes to Marrakech, spending a night in the desert and in Ouarzazate. Our guide Youssef, who drove us all along the way, was very professional and took us to try real experiences that not all tourists get to see. Breathtaking landscapes - Morocco amazed and fascinated us. We drove many miles but still traveled comfortably. Absolutely recommend it - they are a highly professional agency and managed to take us to unique places, like a Berber village in the desert where we were the only tourists. A spectacular, unforgettable experience.

Morocco from the heart with MerzougaWay. Heartfelt congratulations to Hamid, who organized our trip impeccably - present, correct, and extremely helpful. A special mention for our driver Ali, who was by our side through 3 intense days toward the desert: attentive, polite, discreet, and a genuinely good, nice driver. We found snow in the Atlas range and then sun in Ait Ben Haddou, visited women's cooperatives working argan oil and roses, saw the Dades Gorges, and finally reached the Sahara dunes by camel before sleeping in a tented desert camp. 3 intense and exciting days. Next time in Morocco I'll rely on you again, inshallah!
