Desert on Horseback
While camels are synonymous with the Sahara, horses offer a different kind of desert magic. Faster, more responsive, and capable of reaching places inaccessible to 4x4s, a horse trek through the Merzouga landscape feels like a scene from One Thousand and One Nights.
Our horses are a cross of Barb (the ancient North African breed) and Arabian bloodlines — hardy, calm, and perfectly adapted to desert conditions. They are well-trained, responsive to beginner riders, and capable of impressive speed for those who want to canter across an open flat.
The Route
The standard circuit leads from the stable at the edge of Merzouga through dune corridors, past the seasonal lake (Dayet Srij) that attracts flamingos in winter, through fringes of palm oasis, and to a high vantage point on the dune ridge for panoramic views.
Your guide — an experienced local rider — sets the pace based on the group's ability, moving from a walk through easy terrain to a trot or canter on the open flats for those who feel confident.
For All Levels
Complete beginners: Start with 30 minutes of instruction (mounting, basic commands, stop and go) before joining the trail.
Intermediate riders: The standard pace includes walk and trot, with options to canter on safe flat sections.
Experienced riders: Inform us at booking — advanced routes with more challenging terrain and extended canters can be arranged.
