What to Watch on New Year's Eve in Marrakech
Marrakech doesn't run one central, city-wide fireworks show the way some capitals do on December 31 — what you'll actually see depends entirely on where you spend the evening. That's worth knowing upfront, because it changes how you should plan: the night isn't something you passively watch, it's something you pick a venue for.
The three realistic formats
Luxury hotels are the most predictable option. Several of Marrakech's five-star properties run a formal New Year's Eve dinner or gala each year, and some include a fireworks display or at least a countdown moment as part of the program — but the exact format changes year to year and isn't something we can promise in advance for any specific hotel. If a fireworks show matters to you, contact the hotel directly and ask whether their December 31 program includes one before booking.
Rooftop bars and restaurants, concentrated in Gueliz and around the medina's edges, are the other common option — less formal than a hotel gala, usually with a DJ or live music building toward midnight, and a skyline view that's part of the appeal even without fireworks. This is the better fit if you want atmosphere and flexibility over a fixed program.
Riad courtyards offer a quieter, more intimate version of the evening — a traditional dinner, sometimes live Moroccan music, in a smaller and more personal setting than a hotel ballroom or a rooftop crowd. It trades visual spectacle for ambiance.
What actually determines a good night
More than the venue type, what makes New Year's Eve work in Marrakech is picking one format and committing to it rather than trying to hop between locations after dark — traffic and transport get genuinely difficult in the hours around midnight (see our transport guide for December 31 for why), so a venue change mid-evening usually costs more time and stress than it's worth.
If you do want fireworks specifically, that's worth confirming with your chosen venue in advance rather than assuming — plenty of good New Year's nights in Marrakech happen without any fireworks at all, built instead around music, food, and the atmosphere of a city that takes the night seriously.
