Agafay Desert After a Match: A Post-Game Escape from Marrakech

During Morocco's hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations from December 2025 into January 2026, Stade de Marrakech saw its share of fixtures, and plenty of fans looked for something to do with the rest of the evening once the final whistle blew. The Agafay Desert, under an hour outside the city, was — and still is, tournament or not — a genuinely good answer: a stark, moon-like rocky desert that couldn't feel more different from a packed stadium, close enough to fit into a single evening.

Why Agafay works as a short escape

Agafay's main appeal is proximity. It's roughly forty-five minutes to an hour from central Marrakech and about the same from the stadium, which makes it realistic to leave after an evening match, still catch sunset over the desert, and be back in your hotel bed at a reasonable hour. The landscape itself — dry, rocky, and largely empty of the palm groves and greenery you'd expect near Marrakech — is part of the draw; it's a genuinely different environment from the city, and the quiet after a loud match day or a busy day of sightseeing is the point as much as the scenery.

The three ways to do it

A sunset-and-dinner outing is the simplest option and the one that suits an evening after a match: a scenic drive out, mint tea on arrival, sunset over the desert, a three-course Moroccan dinner, and a return transfer to Marrakech, all done in about four to five hours. An overnight stay in a desert camp is the better choice if you have a free day either side of it — it adds a sunset camel ride, dinner, a night in a proper (often quite comfortable) tent, and breakfast with the desert view the next morning, which is worth it if photography or stargazing matters to you. For anyone wanting more adrenaline than ambience, quad biking or a buggy tour through the dunes followed by dinner at the camp is the third option, and it tends to suit groups of friends more than a quiet couple's evening.

What actually happens once you arrive

Camps generally start with mint tea and a briefing on the facilities, which are more comfortable than "desert camp" might suggest — proper seating areas, clean restrooms, and charging points, though don't expect reliable Wi-Fi out there. Dinner is typically a tagine-based Moroccan meal with vegetarian options available on request, and the evening's entertainment is usually live Berber music, with stargazing afterward if the camp has a clear view away from any light pollution — which, this being genuine desert, most of them do.

What to bring

Pack for a bigger temperature drop than Marrakech itself: the city can still be warm at 6pm while the desert is noticeably colder by the time the sun's gone, so a proper jacket or warm layer matters even in a short evening visit. Comfortable closed shoes handle the rocky, sandy terrain better than sandals, and a scarf is useful against both evening chill and dust. If stargazing is the highlight for you, bringing your own small pair of binoculars adds something a shared camp telescope can't.

Booking around a match schedule

If you're timing this around an evening kickoff, most operators (us included) can arrange pickup directly from the stadium or your hotel with a flexible departure window, since match end times aren't always predictable to the minute. For a day match, an earlier departure — mid-afternoon rather than early evening — gives you more time at the camp before dinner. Either way, book a day or two ahead if you can; last-minute availability exists but the better camps and time slots go first, especially on weekends.
