Thrills & Relaxation: Quad Biking, Camel Trek, and Stargazing in Merzouga

Experience the ultimate Merzouga adventure with quad biking through the dunes, a guided camel trek, and a stargazing night under the Sahara's darkest skies.

Merzouga rewards travelers who want both ends of the experience spectrum in the same day — an adrenaline rush in the afternoon and near-total stillness after dark. Quad biking through the Erg Chebbi dunes, a camel trek timed to sunset, and a stargazing session later that night cover exactly that range, and the three pair naturally because each one uses the desert differently: one for speed, one for pace, one for silence.

[!NOTE] Fast-Facts & Direct Answer Summary

Experience the ultimate Merzouga adventure with quad biking through the dunes, a guided camel trek, and a stargazing night under the Sahara's darkest skies.

  • Destination Focus: Authentic Moroccan culture, scenic routes, and local travel insights
  • Currency & Payments: Moroccan Dirham (MAD; ~10 MAD ≈ €1 / $1.08 USD). Cash is essential outside major hotels
  • Best Travel Window: October through April offers ideal temperate weather across Morocco and the desert
  • Local Hospitality: Berber culture is renowned for warm hospitality, mint tea welcoming rituals, and rich musical heritage.

Quad biking through the dunes

Quad biking gets you into terrain a car or camel simply can't reach — soft ridgelines, narrow valleys between the tallest dunes, and viewpoints that reward a bit of horsepower. No prior riding experience is needed; every outing starts with pickup from your accommodation in Merzouga, a safety briefing, and proper riding instruction before anyone sets off. Routes typically run one or two hours, with a sunset option for those who want to end the ride with the light show, and you're kitted out with a helmet, goggles, and gloves. Solo and double-rider quads are both available if you'd rather ride with a partner than solo.

The classic Sahara camel trek

Once the adrenaline wears off, a guided camel trek across Erg Chebbi's dunes — some of the tallest in Morocco, reaching around 150 metres — is the natural comedown. Berber guides lead small groups at an easy, unhurried pace, timing the ride so you reach a high dune just as the sun touches the horizon. It suits families and travelers of any fitness level, since the camel does the work; a turban is provided for sun protection, and guides tend to build in photo stops at the best viewpoints rather than rushing straight through.

Under the Sahara stars

Merzouga sits under some of the darkest skies in Africa — negligible light pollution means the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye most of the year. A guided stargazing session with a telescope and a guide who can talk you through constellations and visible planets is the natural close to the day, especially with mint tea and storytelling around a fire while you wait for your eyes to adjust. It's best experienced from a desert camp away from the village lights, where the sky actually gets a chance to go fully dark.

Planning a day that fits all three

A typical way to string these together: quad biking in the afternoon while the light is still workable for photos, a camel trek timed for sunset, dinner at camp, then stargazing once full darkness sets in. Book ahead if you're traveling in peak season (October to April), since desert camps and guides fill up. Pack comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes for the quad and camel legs, stay hydrated through the day since temperatures swing sharply once the sun goes down, and bring a warm layer for the stargazing session — desert nights get properly cold even when the afternoon was hot.

If you'd rather have all three activities (plus an overnight stay) built into one itinerary instead of booking separately, our Merzouga desert day trip activities package bundles them together.

We traveled to Morocco in a group of 6 adults, including my parents, who are already seniors, in the middle of summer. For my family it was a leap of faith to trust an agency we found online for the first time, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Hamid, the trip organizer, was very kind and attentive both before and throughout the whole tour. It was a fully personalized tour - we got to do everything we wanted, from visiting the Sahara to enjoying the beach. He always looked out for our comfort, especially my parents': comfortable transport, well-timed stops at places with restrooms, beautiful air-conditioned hotels, and varied, plentiful food. Thanks to his organization we were able to enjoy the trip with real peace of mind. It was a great experience we would absolutely recommend.

Last week I did a self-drive trip from Fes to Merzouga, leaving the car rental, the riad in Merzouga, the desert camp, and the guided desert activities all in the hands of MerzougaWay and Hamid, and I can only say that everything was perfectly organized, right on time. Thanks to everyone at the riad we stayed at and the desert camp, as well as the guides who joined us for the 4x4 experience, Berber culture, and the camel transfer. Thanks to Hamid and MerzougaWay for that quad-bike ride back to the riad from the camp - what an experience, riding a quad across the dunes early in the morning. If you're thinking of traveling to Merzouga, I definitely recommend Hamid as the organizer of your adventure.

Trustworthy tour agency. I wrote Hamid what I wanted and he just made it happen. He arranged everything so quick and smooth. We had a 3-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech. Said was our guide and he made me and my wife very comfortable. He took us from our riad and carried us in his modern 4x4 Toyota to magnificent places. He gave us the confidence to ask him whatever we wanted to do and wherever we wanted to drive - like old friends. He is open-minded and respectful. I recommend asking the agency for Said to be your driver. In the 3-day tour you cross the Atlas mountains, stay one night in a perfect hotel in Dades with great food, then stay one night in Erg Chebbi dunes in a luxury glamp camp. One night wasn't enough for a real desert experience - if you have time, take two nights in the desert.

Unforgettable holiday. An 8-day itinerant tour in Morocco, including 3 days organized by Hamid - MerzougaWay: a route from Fes to Marrakech, spending a night in the desert and in Ouarzazate. Our guide Youssef, who drove us all along the way, was very professional and took us to try real experiences that not all tourists get to see. Breathtaking landscapes - Morocco amazed and fascinated us. We drove many miles but still traveled comfortably. Absolutely recommend it - they are a highly professional agency and managed to take us to unique places, like a Berber village in the desert where we were the only tourists. A spectacular, unforgettable experience.

Morocco from the heart with MerzougaWay. Heartfelt congratulations to Hamid, who organized our trip impeccably - present, correct, and extremely helpful. A special mention for our driver Ali, who was by our side through 3 intense days toward the desert: attentive, polite, discreet, and a genuinely good, nice driver. We found snow in the Atlas range and then sun in Ait Ben Haddou, visited women's cooperatives working argan oil and roses, saw the Dades Gorges, and finally reached the Sahara dunes by camel before sleeping in a tented desert camp. 3 intense and exciting days. Next time in Morocco I'll rely on you again, inshallah!
