Morocco Tours from Marrakech: What's Actually Worth Booking
Marrakech is the natural starting point for most of Morocco's best trips, and the honest answer to "what tours should I book from here" depends entirely on how much time you have. We're MerzougaWay, a private tour operator based around the Marrakech-to-Merzouga desert route, so here's a straight rundown of what's actually worth doing — our own tours plus what to know about the rest of your Marrakech time.
The Sahara: the trip most people come for
If a Morocco trip includes Marrakech, it should almost always include a night in the Sahara — the desert near Merzouga is roughly 9-10 hours' drive away, and the route itself (over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, through Ait Benhaddou, down the Dades and Todgha valleys) is as much a reason to go as the dunes at the end of it. We run this as a private tour, not a shared group departure, at a few different lengths: a 2-day, 1-night version from €220 for travelers short on time; the 3-day, 2-night version most people end up choosing, from €250, which adds a proper stop in the Dades Valley rather than rushing straight through; and 4-day (€420) or 5-day (€520) versions that slow the pace further and add more gorge and valley time on both legs. All of them end with a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, a night in a desert camp, and a sunrise trek back out.
The Atlas Mountains, without the desert
Not everyone has the days for a Sahara trip, and the High Atlas on its own is worth a visit. Our overnight trekking tour spends two days and one night hiking through Berber villages toward the Toubkal region — walnut groves, terraced orchards, a home-cooked dinner and breakfast with a host family — for €120. If you only have a single day, the Ourika Valley (€35) and the Three Valleys route (€40) both cover Atlas scenery and Berber village stops without an overnight commitment.
Day trips that don't need a full multi-day tour
A handful of one-day trips cover the destinations people most often ask about outside the desert route itself. Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate (€45) get you to the UNESCO-listed kasbah made famous by Game of Thrones and Gladiator, plus the film studios in Ouarzazate, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and back in a day. Essaouira on the Atlantic coast (€35) and the Ouzoud Waterfalls (€35) are both easy single-day escapes from the city in the opposite direction.
City activities worth adding on
Inside Marrakech itself, a few add-ons are worth knowing about if you want more than the medina and souks on your own: a cooking class and food tour (€45, half-day), a street food tour by night (€35), and a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over the Atlas foothills (€180, half-day). None of these require a multi-day commitment — they slot in around whatever else is on your itinerary.
Practical notes
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most comfortable months for both the mountains and the desert leg — cooler than summer, without winter's cold desert nights. Whatever the season, pack for a big temperature swing if you're heading into the Sahara: it can be genuinely hot at midday and cold enough for a jacket after dark.
