If a crowded hotel ballroom or a city square countdown isn't what you're after, the Agafay Desert is the closest genuine alternative to Marrakech — a rocky, moon-like plateau about 30-45 minutes outside the city, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon and none of the noise or traffic of downtown Marrakech on the busiest night of the year. You can leave your riad in the afternoon, spend the evening under a genuinely dark sky, and be back in Marrakech by the early hours, or stay the night and wake up to a desert sunrise on January 1st.
What Agafay actually looks like
Worth being clear about upfront: Agafay has no sand dunes. It's a stony, arid plateau, not the Sahara postcard image of golden dunes — that landscape belongs to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, roughly 9-10 hours' drive away. What Agafay offers instead is its own kind of dramatic: pale rock stretching to the horizon, the snow-dusted High Atlas peaks catching the last light at sunset, and — once night falls — a sky largely free of Marrakech's light pollution. On a clear December night, and most December nights in Agafay are clear, the stars are genuinely striking.
What a New Year's Eve out there generally involves
Desert camps running a December 31st evening near Marrakech typically build the night around the same core elements: a sunset camel ride while the light is good, a Moroccan dinner served under the stars (tagine, pastilla, or a slow-roasted lamb méchoui are common), live Berber or Gnawa music around the fire, and a midnight countdown with a toast. On December 31st specifically, expect a fuller evening than a normal night — more courses, a longer music set, a midnight toast — but the exact December 31st programme and any date-specific pricing is worth confirming with us directly rather than assuming, since capacity and format for that one night can differ from our standard listing.
