What to Wear on New Year's Eve in Marrakech

The one thing that catches people off guard about New Year's Eve in Marrakech is the temperature swing: daytime in late December is usually mild and sunny, often comfortable in a light jacket, but once the sun goes down the temperature drops fast, and by midnight it can be genuinely cold — cold enough that an evening dress or a summer suit alone won't cut it. Layering is less a style choice here than a practical necessity.

What that means in practice

Whatever you plan to wear for the evening — a dress, a suit, something smart-casual — bring a real outer layer to go over it: a coat, a structured jacket, or at minimum a heavy shawl. Rooftop venues in particular get cold once you're outside and the wind picks up, and a beautiful outfit that leaves you shivering by 11 PM isn't doing its job. Footwear matters more than people expect too — you'll likely be on your feet for a few hours between dinner, moving between areas, and standing for a countdown, so comfort should weigh as heavily as style when you're choosing shoes.

A five-star hotel gala generally expects genuine formalwear — a suit or a cocktail dress at minimum, sometimes stricter depending on the specific event, so it's worth checking the dress code when you book rather than assuming. A rooftop bar or restaurant is more forgiving: smart-casual works fine, though it's still a dress-up-a-little occasion rather than a jeans-and-sneakers one. A riad dinner sits somewhere in between — elegant but comfortable, since you'll likely be walking through medina streets to get there, which makes very high heels or delicate shoes a genuine liability on uneven stone paths.
