The 2-day option: Marrakech to Zagora

Our 2-day Marrakech to Zagora tour (from €190) is the fastest way to reach real Sahara dunes from Marrakech. Day one crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas, stops at the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, then continues down the dramatic Draa Valley — Morocco's longest oasis — to Zagora, where you catch a sunset camel trek into the desert dunes and spend the night at a camp with dinner and Berber music. These are smaller, rockier dunes than the towering Erg Chebbi sand sea further southeast, more about the Draa oasis and the old caravan-route atmosphere than sheer dune height. Day two heads back through the Draa Valley to Marrakech. It's the right call if you're short on time and want to say you've genuinely stood in the Sahara without giving up two extra days of your trip — but it does mean a lot of driving relative to time in the dunes.

The 3-day option: Marrakech to Merzouga

Our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour (from €250) reaches Erg Chebbi, Morocco's tallest and most photographed dune system, and is the most balanced option of the three. Day one follows the same Tizi n'Tichka and Aït Ben Haddou route, continuing to the Dades Valley for the first overnight. Day two crosses the Todra Gorge — a dramatic 300-meter canyon — before reaching Merzouga in the afternoon for a sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi and a night at a luxury desert camp with an en-suite tent. Day three includes a stop in Khamlia village for a Gnawa music performance and a visit with a nomadic family before the drive back to Marrakech. This is the itinerary most people mean when they picture "the" Marrakech desert tour, and it's why it's our most-booked route.

The 4-day option: more time, less rushing

The 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour (from €420) follows the same core route but spreads it out, adding real time in the Dades and Todra Gorges rather than passing through on the way somewhere else, plus an extra night that takes the rush out of the long driving days. If the 3-day tour appeals but you don't want to spend two of those three days mostly in the car, this is the one to take instead — same dunes, same luxury camp, more breathing room around the drive.

Which one is right for you

If your total trip is under a week and the desert is one stop among several, the 2-day Zagora tour gets you there and back with minimal disruption to the rest of your itinerary. If the desert is a genuine highlight of the trip and you can spare three days, the 3-day Merzouga tour is the standard, well-tested choice — it's what most travelers end up booking. And if you'd rather not spend two consecutive days mostly driving, the extra day on the 4-day tour buys you real comfort, not just more stops.
