The trick is matching the excursion to how much time you actually have, since some of these are comfortable half-days and others quietly eat an entire day on the road before you've done anything.

Into the Atlas Mountains

The closest genuine mountain scenery is about 1.5-2 hours away in the Ourika Valley or around Asni and Imlil — Berber villages terraced into the hillsides, walnut and almond groves, and small weekly markets (Ourika's souk runs on Mondays, Asni's on Saturdays) that are worth timing your visit around if a local market is part of what you want to see. Boat rides run near the base in season, and the resident wild Barbary macaques along the trail are as much a draw as the falls themselves. It's a longer day than the Atlas villages trip, so it works best if you're not also trying to fit in something else the same afternoon.

Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

This is the classic southern day trip, 3.5-4 hours each way, which makes it a genuinely long day if you do it as a there-and-back — many travelers instead treat Ouarzazate as an overnight stop on the way to the desert rather than a same-day round trip from Marrakech. The draw is the UNESCO-listed kasbah at Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village that's been used as a filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia among others, plus the option to stop at the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate itself. A taste of the desert without the full crossing

If you want a desert experience but don't have the days for an actual Sahara trip, Agafay is the answer — a stony, dune-free desert about an hour from Marrakech, popular for sunset camel rides, dinner under the stars, and stargazing without the long drive. It's not Erg Chebbi's towering golden dunes, and it shouldn't be mistaken for the real Sahara, but as a half-day or evening excursion it delivers a genuine taste of desert atmosphere that's otherwise a two-day round trip away.

The real Sahara — the sand-dune Erg Chebbi landscape near Merzouga that most people picture when they think "Morocco desert" — is not a day trip from Marrakech. Sunset at the Skala de la Ville, the old sea-facing ramparts, is worth timing your visit around. Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons across the board: comfortable temperatures everywhere from the mountains to the desert.
