Getting to Chefchaouen: From Fes or From Tangier, Compared
Chefchaouen sits in the Rif Mountains, off the main Fes-Marrakech-Casablanca circuit most Morocco itineraries follow, which means getting there is a genuine routing decision rather than an obvious stop along the way. The two realistic bases are Fes and Tangier, and which one makes sense depends less on Chefchaouen itself than on where the rest of your trip is going.
From Fes: the longer but more common route
Fes to Chefchaouen is about 198km, roughly 3.5-4 hours by private car on the N13 through the Rif foothills. CTM's scheduled bus covers the same route in around 4 hours 40 minutes, with tickets running roughly $12-18 — a reasonable budget option if you're not on a tight schedule, though it runs a handful of times a day rather than continuously. This is the more common pairing simply because more travelers are already routing through Fes as part of a broader Morocco itinerary, and Chefchaouen becomes a natural detour rather than a separate trip.
From Tangier: the shorter route
Tangier to Chefchaouen is considerably shorter — about 115km, roughly 2 hours by private car. CTM's bus takes around 2.5 hours and costs 50-80 MAD (roughly $5-8), among the cheapest legs of a Morocco trip. This pairing makes the most sense if you're arriving in Morocco via the Tangier ferry from Spain or flying into Tangier directly, since it avoids doubling back through Fes just to reach the Rif.
Which base actually makes more sense
If your trip already includes Fes — which it does for most itineraries that also cover Marrakech and the desert — routing Chefchaouen as a Fes side trip avoids adding a separate leg to Tangier that doesn't connect to anything else. If you're entering or leaving Morocco through Tangier specifically, the shorter Tangier route is the more efficient use of your time, and trying to route through Fes first just to reach Chefchaouen adds a genuinely unnecessary detour.
Day trip or overnight
A day trip from Fes is realistic — roughly 7-8 hours round trip on the road plus time in town, which is what our Chefchaouen day trip from Fes is built around, private transport included both ways. That said, Chefchaouen's blue-washed lanes photograph best in the early morning and late afternoon light, before and after the day-trip crowds — if your schedule allows even one overnight, you'll see a genuinely different, quieter version of the town than a single midday visit shows you.
