The honest short answer is no — Merzouga sits roughly 560km from Marrakech, and getting there by road takes 9-10 hours of driving. It's not a nearby day-trip destination in the way some travelers hope. What it is, though, is very accessible as a 2- to 4-day trip, and the distance is part of why the journey itself is worthwhile rather than something to regret.

Why it feels far, and why it still works

Marrakech sits on the western side of the High Atlas, in the fertile plains; Merzouga is deep in the southeast, right at the edge of the Sahara's Erg Chebbi dunes. Between them is an entire mountain range, crossed via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and then a long stretch of increasingly arid country running through Ouarzazate and Erfoud. That's a real geographic barrier, not just a long stretch of empty road — which is exactly why the drive takes as long as it does.

What makes it accessible despite the distance is that the roads themselves are in genuinely good condition — the main highway sections are well-maintained, and private tour operators run this route routinely. Treated as a multi-day trip rather than a single-day dash, it's a completely manageable, well-established journey that a large number of visitors make every year.

How much time you actually need

Two days is the realistic minimum: a long first day driving to Merzouga in time for a sunset camel trek into the desert camp, an overnight in the dunes, then the return drive the next day. It's a full itinerary but genuinely rewarding rather than just a box-check. Three days is what most travelers end up choosing, splitting the drive across the mountain crossing (with a stop at Ait Ben Haddou and an overnight around Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley) and the final push into the desert, which turns two long driving days into a much more comfortable pace. Four to five days stretches this further — often adding more time in the dunes themselves or a loop back through Fes and the Middle Atlas rather than retracing the same road.

A genuine single-day round trip isn't realistic: that's 18-20 hours of driving for two or three hours in the desert, arriving and leaving in the dark and missing both the sunset and sunrise that are the actual point of going.

Getting there

Long-distance buses (CTM and Supratours) cover the route too, more slowly and with a transfer near the end since neither actually terminates in Merzouga itself, but they're the budget option if driving isn't in the plan.

If you only have a day or two and want a desert experience without the full journey, the honest alternative is the Agafay desert, about an hour from Marrakech — a smaller, rockier landscape than Erg Chebbi's dunes, but a real one-day option where Merzouga genuinely isn't.

The bottom line

Merzouga isn't close to Marrakech, and pretending otherwise sets up a bad trip. But the distance is exactly what makes the destination special — this is genuinely remote Sahara, not desert-adjacent scenery — and as a 2- to 4-day journey rather than a rushed dash, it's one of the most worthwhile trips in Morocco.
