The region around Merzouga and Erfoud sits on what was once a shallow prehistoric sea, and the fossil record it left behind is genuinely remarkable — trilobites, ammonites, and marine fossils hundreds of millions of years old, still being quarried and prepared by local workshops today. Erfoud is barely 50 km from Merzouga, under an hour by road, which makes it an easy half-day or full-day addition to a desert trip rather than a detour.
What you'll actually see
The Kem Kem beds nearby are known for dinosaur-era fossils, including Spinosaurus teeth and fish and crocodile remains — one of Morocco's more significant paleontological sites. In Erfoud itself, the Orthoceras factories double as small museums: you can watch quarried stone slabs, full of ancient marine fossils, cut and polished into tabletops, sinks, and decorative pieces, with the upstairs display rooms showing genuinely large trilobite and crinoid specimens. A short way out of town, sites like Hamar Laghdad preserve Devonian-era coral mounds — dozens of them strung along a several-kilometer ridge — and give a good sense of just how much marine life once existed here, long before the Sahara existed as a desert at all.

It's possible to visit Erfoud independently, but a local guide is worth it here — not just for the geology, but because Moroccan regulations around fossil collection and export are specific, and a guide keeps you on the right side of them while also getting you into workshops and sites you'd likely miss on your own.

If you're tempted to buy a piece to take home, buy from an established factory or dealer rather than a roadside stall, and know that genuine fossils show natural, irregular wear rather than a uniform polished surface. The trade itself is a real part of the local economy — many families in Erfoud have worked fossil mining and preparation for generations — so buying from a reputable local business is also a way of supporting that heritage directly rather than undercutting it.
Practical notes
October through April is the most comfortable time to visit, with mild daytime temperatures. Bring sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, and water, since much of the visit involves walking around open quarry and factory sites. Expect a modest entry or viewing fee at some factories, and a certain amount of sales pitch once you're inside a workshop — that's normal here and doesn't obligate you to buy anything.
