For those with more time, 4-day (from €420) and 5-day (from €520) versions extend further into the Dades Valley and give more breathing room on the road.

The routes
From Marrakech, the classic route crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at the UNESCO site of Aït Ben Haddou, continues through Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley, and overnights in the Dades or Tinghir area before reaching Merzouga. From Fes, the route runs through the Middle Atlas, passing Ifrane (often nicknamed "Little Switzerland" for its alpine-style architecture) and down through the Ziz Valley into the desert. Multi-city loops connecting Marrakech, Merzouga, Fes, Chefchaouen, and Rabat are also possible for travelers with 7-10 days who want to see more of the country around the desert leg.

The centerpiece of any Merzouga trip is the camel trek into the dunes, usually timed for sunset or sunrise. Most tours add a 4x4 excursion through the surrounding oases and nomad settlements, and sandboarding down the dune faces is available for anyone who wants it. Five or more days suits anyone who wants to add a wider loop through the country rather than just the desert leg.
