The short answer is no — Merzouga has no commercial airport, and there's no direct flight to book no matter how you search for one. It's a small desert town with no runway infrastructure to support commercial aircraft, and the passenger volume simply wouldn't justify one even if the land were available. The nearest airport with any commercial service is Errachidia (ERH), about two hours' drive from Merzouga, connected to Casablanca on Royal Air Maroc — a roughly hour-long flight, but only a few departures a week, not a daily link, and there's no direct Marrakech-Errachidia route at all. It's not something to build a trip around given how infrequent that service is.

What flying partway actually gets you

The one flight-adjacent option that exists is landing somewhere else entirely and driving the rest of the way — most commonly Fes, which has a proper international airport and is a genuine domestic hop from Marrakech (about an hour and five minutes in the air; the current non-stop service on the route runs a few times a week rather than daily, so check live schedules before assuming a same-day connection). From Fes, it's still a 5-6 hour drive south to Merzouga, whether by rental car, a pre-arranged transfer, or a shared grand taxi. Add it up — airport arrival time, the flight itself, deplaning, and then the drive — and you land on a door-to-door total that's about the same as just driving from Marrakech directly, sometimes longer once you count airport buffers and delays. You're not saving time; you're trading a scenic road trip for an airport experience and still finishing with several hours in a car regardless.

Private charter flights and helicopter tours exist in Morocco, but they're a different category entirely — priced for a handful of ultra-premium travelers rather than anyone planning an ordinary Sahara trip, and helicopter tours from Marrakech are scenic experiences over the Atlas, not a way to actually get to Merzouga. Neither is worth factoring into normal trip planning.

Why the drive itself isn't the problem people expect

The real reason "should I fly instead" comes up at all is that people picture the Marrakech-Merzouga drive — roughly 560 km, 9-10 hours — as pure endurance. In practice, most travelers who do it come away saying the drive was one of the best parts of the trip: the road crosses the High Atlas via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, passes Ait Ben Haddou's UNESCO kasbah, and moves through the Dades Valley before the landscape opens into desert. Split across two or three days with proper overnight stops, rather than treated as a single long haul, it's genuinely scenic rather than something to survive.

If it's specifically the driving — not the time — that worries you, the better fix isn't flying, it's hiring a private driver. You get the same door-to-door timing as the direct drive, none of the mountain-road stress, and a guide who can point out what you're passing, for a cost that's comparable to or less than flying to Fes and arranging transport from there. That's the option worth taking seriously if long drives genuinely aren't for you — not the airport.

When flying partway is actually worth it

There are a few real scenarios where flying to Fes and driving the rest makes sense: a genuinely tight schedule where every hour in Merzouga matters more than the journey itself, real driving anxiety, physical limitations that make long car seating difficult, or elderly travelers for whom breaking up the trip is worth the added cost and complexity. Outside of those, driving direct — self-driven, with a private driver, or as part of an organized tour — is faster door-to-door, cheaper, and shows you a side of Morocco that flying skips entirely.
