The honest caveat is the journey itself: it's roughly a 9-10 hour drive from Marrakech across the High Atlas, or 7-9 hours from Fès through the Middle Atlas. There's no airport in Merzouga and no direct flight into the region from Marrakech — the closest airport, Errachidia, is served mainly by domestic connections through Casablanca rather than a quick direct hop, so flying doesn't actually shortcut the trip the way it might elsewhere in Morocco. Most visitors handle the distance by treating the drive itself as part of the trip, breaking it up with stops in Ouarzazate or the Dades Valley rather than trying to rush straight through.

Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) are the most comfortable seasons, with daytime temperatures in a pleasant 20-30°C range. Summer regularly pushes past 40°C in the day, which thins out the crowds but makes midday activity genuinely uncomfortable; winter days stay mild but nights can drop close to freezing, worth planning for with proper layers and a camp that has real heating rather than just blankets.
