The two airports anyone flying "toward" Merzouga would actually use are Ouarzazate (OZZ), about 360 km and 5.5-6 hours by road from Merzouga, and Errachidia (ERH), genuinely closer at around 130 km and under 2 hours by road. Neither gets you to Merzouga itself — both still require a ground transfer at the other end.
Flying via Ouarzazate
This is the more practical of the two flight routes, since Ouarzazate has more reliable domestic connections from Marrakech — a short hop, around an hour in the air, though frequency and schedules vary by season, so check current timetables rather than assuming a fixed daily departure. Round-trip fares typically run somewhere in the €100-€200 range. Landing in Ouarzazate still leaves you with a genuine 5.5-6 hour drive to Merzouga, whether by private transfer (roughly €100-€150), a self-driven rental, or a grand taxi. Add airport time on both ends to the flight and the transfer, and the door-to-door total lands close to 9-10 hours — essentially the same as just driving from Marrakech directly, at meaningfully higher cost once you include the flight.
Flying via Errachidia
Errachidia sits noticeably closer to Merzouga, which trims the ground transfer to under 2 hours — genuinely the shortest final leg of any route into the desert. The catch is getting there: Royal Air Maroc's Marrakech-Errachidia routing typically isn't direct, connecting through Casablanca and adding real time back onto what looked like the faster option on paper, so check the actual routing (not just the two city names) before assuming it beats Ouarzazate. Errachidia does have a direct domestic hop from Casablanca (around an hour in the air), which makes more sense if you're starting your Morocco trip there rather than in Marrakech.
Why this rarely beats just driving
Run the numbers honestly and flying doesn't actually save time — by the time you've added airport transfers, check-in, and the ground leg at the far end, the total is comparable to or slower than driving the 560 km route directly, which takes about 9-10 hours door-to-door with no airport procedures at all. It costs more too: a flight plus ground transfer typically comes out higher than fuel and a rental car, and often higher than what a full multi-day private tour costs once accommodation, meals, and activities are factored in. What flying actually buys you is a break from sitting in a car for a long stretch, at the price of an airport experience and a transfer that's still hours long. If a long drive is the specific thing you're trying to avoid, hiring a private driver solves that directly — you're not the one driving, and there's no airport detour involved at all.
