Marrakech to Merzouga is around 560 km, and covering it in one push takes 9-10 hours behind the wheel — longer with any real stops. The road climbs over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), then runs down through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Tinghir before the landscape opens into desert around Erfoud and, finally, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.

There are a few real ways to make this trip. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable option and the one we run at MerzougaWay — but we don't offer it as a same-day nonstop transfer, because 9-10 hours straight is a genuinely exhausting way to see the Atlas and the desert for the first time. Instead, our private tours split the drive across two or more days, with an overnight stop in the Dades/Tinghir area (or, on shorter routes, further along toward Merzouga), real stops at Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge along the way, and time built in for the camel trek and desert camp once you arrive.

If you want to drive yourself, self-drive rental is genuinely possible — the road is a well-maintained national route, sealed the whole way, though the mountain pass can get busy with trucks and needs caution rather than speed. CTM and Supratours, Morocco's two established national bus operators, also run services on this corridor if you're travelling independently on a budget; expect a similarly long day and a fixed schedule rather than flexible stops.

What a private multi-day tour with us actually looks like

Our shortest option is a 2-day, 1-night version (from €220 per person) that gets you to the dunes for a sunset camel trek and a night in a desert camp before returning. The most popular is the 3-day, 2-night tour (from €250), which adds a full stop at Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge along the way. Both include a private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver/guide, and an overnight in a proper desert camp with the sunset camel trek included — real inclusions, not generic marketing language.

Practical notes for the road

The route is best travelled September through April, when temperatures are milder; July and August get extremely hot, especially through the lower desert stretches. An early morning departure from Marrakech is worth it regardless of season, since it means arriving at Erg Chebbi with enough daylight left for the camel trek out to camp. Bring water, sun protection, a phone charger for the car, and a warm layer for the cold desert night even if the day was hot — desert temperature swings are sharp.
