The route, honestly

Merzouga is a full day's drive from Marrakech — figure nine to ten hours of actual road time — so this is structured as a two-day, one-night trip with the journey itself as part of the experience, not an inconvenience to rush through. You'll leave Marrakech in the morning, cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and stop at the Ait Ben Haddou kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed spots in southern Morocco, before continuing through Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley. You'll reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, transfer to camp by camel at sunset, and spend the night there before returning to Marrakech the following day. It's a long first day by design — the stops along the way are part of what you're paying for, not padding.

The core difference is exclusivity: a VIP camp is booked for your group alone rather than shared with other travelers passing through that night, which changes the whole feel of the evening — dinner, conversation, and the fire are yours, not shared with strangers. Tents are built for real comfort rather than just shelter: a proper bed rather than a basic mattress, an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower, and often a private terrace facing the dunes. A dedicated chef prepares dinner specifically for your group rather than a set menu shared across the whole camp, and staff — sometimes described as butler service — handle the details around you rather than you managing your own evening. None of this changes what the desert itself looks like at sunset; it changes how comfortable you are while you're looking at it.

What a night there actually involves

After the sunset camel ride into camp, you're welcomed with tea and settled into your tent before dinner — typically a multi-course Moroccan meal built around whatever the camp's chef is doing that night, served under the stars with the fire going. Most VIP camps include wine or other drinks with dinner, which is worth knowing if you're coming from a standard camp experience where alcohol usually isn't part of it. Evenings often include Berber music around the fire, and a genuinely clear night sky for stargazing — Erg Chebbi has very little light pollution, so even without a telescope the Milky Way is usually visible. Morning brings a choice between another camel ride at sunrise or a more straightforward 4x4 transfer back to Merzouga village, depending on how early you want to be up a second time.

Comfort details worth knowing before you book

Tents are private and self-contained — your own bathroom rather than a shared block — with proper bedding and, in most camps, electricity for charging devices overnight, which isn't a given at more basic camps. Meals accommodate dietary requirements if you flag them in advance, and wellness add-ons like a private hammam or massage are sometimes available on request, though these vary camp to camp and are worth confirming rather than assuming. What VIP camps generally don't include is alcohol beyond what's already part of the package, or personal expenses and tips, which stay separate regardless of how much else is bundled in.

What to pack

Light, breathable clothing for the daytime drive and stops, genuinely warm layers for the evening and overnight — desert nights get cold year-round, more than most people expect from "Sahara" — comfortable closed shoes for getting in and out of the camp and onto a camel, sun protection, and a headlamp or flashlight, since camps run on limited lighting after dark. A scarf covers both sun and any blown sand during the transfer.

Booking basics

Most VIP camp bookings ask for a deposit to confirm the date, with fuller refunds the further out you cancel and reduced or no refund inside about two weeks of the trip — standard practice for a booking that involves reserving an entire private camp on your behalf. Peak season (March-May and September-November) is when to book earliest, since exclusive camps have limited capacity by definition and the best dates go first. Summer days are intensely hot but the desert still cools off sharply at night; winter reverses that, with genuinely cold nights and comfortable, mild days.
