If you're already in Ouarzazate — maybe after a night there to see the Atlas Film Studios or Aït Ben Haddou, maybe on your way through southern Morocco independently — you're sitting in one of the best possible starting points for a Sahara trip. You've already crossed the High Atlas, so the road east from here is shorter and more direct than starting fresh from Marrakech: roughly 6-7 hours of driving to Merzouga instead of the 9-10 hours you'd face coming over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It also means the entire route is new scenery rather than a repeat of ground you may have already covered on the way south.

That matters more on this route than most, since the appeal of starting from Ouarzazate is flexibility: stopping longer at a kasbah that catches your eye, adjusting the pace to your own energy after a few days of travel, or continuing straight on to Fes instead of looping back.
What the 2-day version actually looks like
Pickup happens at your Ouarzazate hotel or riad, usually between 8 and 9 in the morning, and from there the drive runs east along the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, a green corridor of date palm groves and mud-brick ksour that locals call the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, for good reason. You'll pass more crumbling red-clay fortresses than you can reasonably count, some still lived in, others slowly returning to the earth. Depending on the exact routing, the day can also take in the Dades Valley's wind-carved "Monkey Fingers" rock formations or the narrow, 300-metre walls of Todra Gorge, where the canyon closes to about 10 metres across at its tightest point. Lunch along the way is on your own, usually a simple tagine or couscous at one of the roadside Berber restaurants.
By late afternoon you reach Merzouga and swap the vehicle for a camel for the last stretch: a sunset trek of about 45 minutes to an hour into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed so you're arriving at camp as the sand shifts from gold to deep rose and the first stars come out. Dinner at the desert camp is a full traditional spread eaten around the fire, usually followed by Berber drumming, and you sleep in a private tent rather than a shared one — every version of this tour we run is private, down to the camp accommodation itself.
The second morning starts early if you want the dune sunrise, which most people do — it's genuinely one of the best reasons to do this trip at all. After breakfast at camp, there's typically time for an optional activity or two (sandboarding, a short 4x4 excursion to a nomad family or Khamlia village for Gnawa music) before the drive back to Ouarzazate, arriving in the late afternoon.
Extending to 3 days
If you have an extra day, the natural way to stretch this trip is adding an overnight in Zagora on the way, which lets you take the Draa Valley more slowly and see more of the palm oasis country before pushing on to Merzouga. Because pricing on the extended version depends on the exact route and season, it's worth asking us directly for a quote rather than relying on a fixed number here — but as a general anchor, the standard 2-day, 1-night version from Ouarzazate starts from around €180 per person, with the usual small increase for solo travelers and a lower per-person rate the more people are in your group.
